I've been buying Hanes Beefy T-shirts for years.  They're well-made and available in a fairly good number of colors.  I am a T-shirt guy when it comes to outer wear.  And I prefer a looser fit, so I buy one size larger.
Any T-shirt can develop an odor over time.  To combat that, I wash my T-shirts, with the regular amount of detergent and fabric softener, but I fill my washer's bleach dispenser with White Vinegar.  Also, twice a year after washing them I give them a second wash using only White Vinegar, and a lot of it, like 3/4 of a gallon in my big front load washer.  It's best to skip the fabric softener in the preceding wash, but you can add it to the vinegar wash for the last rinse.
As well, in a continued effort to combat odors, I store my T-shirts on an open-shelf, not in a closed-up drawer.

BeefyT's Are Great!

Great basic T-shirt. If in doubt about your size, go one size larger. I have a few of these shirts that are several years old. Being 100% cotton they then to shrink a little over time. My older XL shirts still feel comfortable in the shoulders, but have shortened more noticeably top to bottom. I have since ordered size 2XL. The 2XL shirts felt a little baggy at first but shrink a little to just the right size after a few washes. Like the XL, the 2XL have shortened a little top to bottom but since they started out a little too big for me, they have shrunk down to just the right size.

Great Basic T-Shirt

I bought a half dozen of these shirts for work. The fit was good, fabric thick, long enough to stay tucked in. After the first wash the hem on the bottom completely unraveled. I wear my work shirts tucked in, so it's still functional as a work shirt, but I won't be buying other shirts from this site or it's partners.

Hem unraveled after one wash

First, the main shirt material that is 100% cotton for the colors that I buy feels soft and high quality.  However, the overall quality of the shirts I received was not good.  I returned many of them.

Advertised claim: "Today it's better than ever - more durable, and with even less shrinkage."

Nope, not less shrinkage.  These shirts used to be labeled as 100% Preshrunk Cotton.  Now they say 100% US Cotton (no mention of prescribe), but I had many shrink on the first wash, washed cold and tumble dried extra low.  See attached photo - I could barely squeeze my head through the neck of some of them, size L, which is the size I have always gotten from Hanes.

Advertised claim: "Double-needle, cover-seamed, lay flat collar keeps its shape wash after wash."

Nope, not for most of the 18 shirts I purchased in two orders!  Some of the collars bent in half, folding over forward from the neck after only a few hours wear.  Double-needle, cover-seamed?  They used to be, like photos on their website and the attached photo of a purchase from a few years ago show. But as you can see in another attached photo, the neck collar of new ones I just bought and returned is poorly sewn on with the main shirt material unevenly gathered or bunched at the seam, making them unsightly.

The tagless label that they used to have in these shirts was a nice feature, but now Hanes is using not one but two very stiff tags, both of which are have sharp corners that curl toward the back of the neck. Imagine that.

The pockets are nice to have, but they are too short (and have been for years).  Although the size of the pocket varies a little from one shirt to another, a standard retractable ballpoint pen usually won't fully clip into the pocket unless you stick it in diagonally.

Not as High Quality as a Few Years Ago

I purchased Hanes Beefy-T's a few years back, and the ones I received with my recent order where NO WAY as "beefy".  I still have my older ones, so it was an easy comparison.  The new ones while not paper thin, are no way "beefy", talk about disappointing...  I got them just for the winter in the North East where I live to help keep me warm....good luck with that! 
While they are not cheaply made and seem to be good quality, the weight of the new shirt material is no way as heavy as my 5 year old versions.  The new ones also come with this 2.5" long tag on the back.......why???  Go back to the decal/iron-on, whatever you call it! In a word, "disappointing".

Where's the Beef???

The XL tees I bought are all snug (even before washing), compared to other XL tees that have been through the wash and are thoroughly shrunken, but still fit great. The Hanes polo I purchased in the same order, also XL, has ample room. Likewise I found the boxer briefs in my order, exactly the same ones I bought a couple years ago, are snug right out of the package — previously a little baggy before first wash — and made of lighter material.

In have been Hanes loyalist for decades, but now cannot rely on them for the same consistently good sizing and overall quality.

XL is not really

Horrible!  I ordered the non-pocket beefy tee in size small, and they were comfortably oversize for that size.  Consequently, I ordered three pocket beefy tees in size small, assuming that the size would be comparable.  The pocket tees size small were so small that a 10-year old boy would feel like he was wearing a straight jacket and would be barely to take a deep breath.  Unusable.

Horrible!  Size small wouldn't fit a 10-year old.

The quality of this product is inferior. I have purchased this product before and the shirts I received are 1/2 the weave count of the shirts I received before. They are sold as 100% preshrunk cotton, but after washing they were reduced at least 1 full size. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Miserable product

The quality, comfort, softness, and thickness of these shirts is not even remotely close to the dozens of Beefy Ts I have purchased over the years from Hanes.  I buy so many it is often 4-6 years between purchases.  All I want is a really thick, soft, and heavy 100% cotton T-shirt with a pocket.  If you make one Hanes, which one is it?

What happened to the all-cotton Beefy T?

Most disappointed in these shirts. I had an older T-shirt in which the label said Hanes Beefy T. I love that shirt. Very comfortable and heavy duty. So I ordered some more of the same, I thought. The shirts I received are thin and flimsy. I was amazed. I thought "If these are "BEEFY", what must the standard shirts be like, tissue paper?".
